Cat Care for Apartment Dwellers

June 01, 2019

One of the many things that make our feline friends such popular pets is the fact that they do just fine in apartments. Fluffy is both small and clean, which makes her a purrfect roommate! However, apartment dwellers do still need to take steps to keep their kitties happy and purring. Here, a North Redington Beach, FL vet discusses cat care for apartment dwellers.

Plants

Cats are always safer staying indoors, but you can bring a bit of the outside in for Fluffy. Set out some pet-safe plants for her to sniff at and nibble on. This will also keep your place looking and smelling nice! Check the ASPCA site here for a list of nontoxic plants.

Windows

Kitties are very curious, and more than a little bit nosy. Fluffy loves looking out windows, and watching birds and squirrels. Offer your furry little voyeur a comfy window seat with a good view. Just make sure that your windows and screens close securely. (Tip: if you have blinds, replace them with shades or curtains. Cats have a habit of making themselves little doors in blinds.)

Toys

Our feline buddies need enrichment and stimulation to be happy. Even the sleepiest furball can’t spend all her time napping! Make sure Fluffy has plenty of playthings to bat under the couch.

Catio

Many apartments have screened in porches or patios. This is a great spot for a catio! Put a few plants out there, along with a cat tower or catwalk and some kitty toys. If you have a private courtyard, consider putting a birdfeeder up in Fluffy’s line of sight.

Veterinary Care

Even if Fluffy stays inside all the time, she’ll still need regular veterinary care. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Vertical Space

If you don’t have a lot of floor space, offer Fluffy vertical space instead. Cat towers are great, as they give kitties a scratching post, vantage point, and jungle gym. Your furball may also enjoy cat shelves.

Litterbox

Choosing a spot for the litterbox can be tricky in an apartment. Consider upcycling an end table, chest, or buffet. Cut a door in one side for Fluffy, and then use the doors for access. You can also look for custom pieces, which were designed to hide litterboxes.
