The holidays have officially arrived! Many people are very busy at this time of year, preparing for seasonal events and festivities. Of course, our feline friends also have some holiday traditions of their own. Read on as a Seminole, FL vet discusses spending the holidays with kitties.
This can be a dangerous time of year for our furry buddies. Plants are a definite issue. Many of those holiday favorites, such as lilies, poinsettias, holly, ivy, yew, and mistletoe, are toxic to pets. You’ll also need to be careful with things like candles and fireplaces.
Don’t forget to put a few things in your kitty’s stocking! Fluffy will definitely appreciate a comfy new bed. Toys and treats are also safe bets. And, needless to say, Santa Claws will also be distributing quite a bit of catnip this month!
Food is a big part of many seasonal festivities. Why not give your kitty a special treat? Fluffy can have canned, boneless tuna, chicken, salmon, or crabmeat in water; sodium-free broth; shredded deli meat; or cooked, plain meat, fish, or poultry without the skin, bones, or fat.
Climbing holiday trees is a time-honored kitty tradition, and one which millions of furballs gleefully participate in every year. If Fluffy hasn’t outgrown this one yet, keep her in mind as you decorate. Put the majority of the decorations on the top part of the tree. This is also important for safety reasons. Things like tinsel, lights, ribbons, ornament hooks, and fragile ornaments are very dangerous to frisky felines! Put just a few unbreakable ornaments on the lower branches.
Cats are all very unique, with their own personalities. Some are fearless and friendly, while others are quite shy. If your furball falls into the former category, she probably won’t be too bothered by visitors. Timid kitties, however, may be more comfy in a quiet back room with bedding, toys, and a litterbox during events.
Our feline pals have a special way of making our houses into homes. A purring cat is really the purrfect touch to any holiday scene! Make Fluffy’s holiday time fun and special for her. Pet her, play with her, and let her snooze on your lap if she likes.
