Is your pet rabbit entering her golden years? Bunnies can live up to 14 years with proper care. However, they usually become seniors at around 5 to 8 years old. Floppy will definitely benefit from some extra TLC at this stage of her life. A local Seminole, FL vet lists some below.
The signs of aging can be fairly subtle in bunnies, at least at first. Some things to watch for include thinning fur, weight changes, and changes in coat color. Floppy may sleep more, and she may not be as playful. You may also note a lack of coordination.
One of the best things you can do for your bunny is to make sure she can sleep comfortably. A good bed is a must! Just choose one your pet won’t eat!
You may need to make some minor adjustments to your furry friend’s diet. Generally, a low-calorie, high-fiber diet is best for older rabbits. Dehydration is a concern with these guys, so make sure Floppy always has fresh water. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Your furball may have trouble jumping up to her favorite spots. Make ‘stairs’ for her out of footstools, ottomans, or shallow storage totes. We also recommend providing soft rugs and non-slip mats out in Floppy’s play area.
Just like people, rabbits benefit from more frequent doctor’s appointments as they age. Your vet may recommend bringing Floppy in twice a year, instead of annually. Dental disease, cataracts, and heart issues are all common in older bunnies. If you have a lop, then your cute pet is also at increased risk of ear problems. In between visits, watch for signs of illness, such as lack of appetite; lethargy; teeth grinding; unusual posture, behavior, or vocalizations; stiffness; and respiratory issues. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these red flags, or anything else out of the ordinary.
Floppy may do better with a litterbox that’s low to the ground. You may also want to add more substrate, to make it easier for her to use.
Last but not least, make sure Floppy feels loved and safe. Spend time with her every day, and pay lots of attention to her!
