Hug Your Cat Day is coming up June 4th. While we think kitties should be hugged every day, this is a purrfect time to show your furball some extra attention. However, there are a few things to keep in mind here … such as Fluffy’s opinion. As it turns out, cats have some pretty clear rules about cuddling. A local Seminole, FL vet lists some of them in this article.
Not all cats enjoy being hugged. Some kitties just prefer to be admired from a distance. If your pet doesn’t seem very cuddly, don’t try to force her to submit. That will just frighten and/or anger her. Fluffy may just prefer to sit quietly at your feet, or stare at you from across the room. That’s purrfectly fine!
Our feline friends can be a bit particular about when they want to snuggle. Fluffy may very well ignore you while you’re relaxing in front of the TV, which of course would be the perfect kitty cuddle time. She might also demand attention when you’re cooking or busy. Just roll with it. Part of the fun of having a cat is just seeing how quirky and opinionated these furballs can be!
When hugging your furry friend, take care to support her properly. Ideally, her weight should be on her legs or bottom. If she decides to put her paws on your arm or shoulder, that’s fine. Just don’t hold her around the middle. This is extremely uncomfortable for cats. In fact, it can actually cause injuries!
If your feline buddy is still a baby, then you should hug her several times a day. This can help socialize little Fluffy. Kittens often think of their humans as second parents, and they tend to feel very safe and cozy when they are being snuggled.
When your kitty decides she’s had enough, she’ll probably wiggle a bit, or start positioning herself to jump down. Fluffy has already made up her mind, so don’t try to change it. Just put your furry pal down. Be very gentle here. Don’t let go until all four paws are touching down!
