Are you planning to spend a lot of time near water this summer? Many of our canine companions absolutely love the water! However, pools and beaches can be very dangerous for Fido. A Seminole, FL vet discusses keeping your pup safe near water in this article.
Not all dogs like the water. If Fido seems nervous, don’t force him to go into it. He may end up even more scared of water than before! If your pet is a four-legged landlubber, so be it!
Accidents happen very quickly. Pay close attention to Fido, and don’t let him out of your sight. Keep him away from places with strong currents or steep drops.
Fido should definitely have a doggy lifejacket. This is a must if you’re going boating. Pups that can’t swim should also be wearing doggy safety gear near the water.
Speaking of boating, think carefully before taking Fido boating. Even if he can swim and is wearing a lifejacket, he could still be in trouble if he falls overboard. Keep in mind that many dogs are quite heavy. Make sure you are able to lift your canine buddy back into the boat if he goes over. If that could be an issue, keep him safe and sound onshore.
Fido’s paw pads are very delicate when they’re wet. Be very careful when he has just gotten out of the water. Use paw balm or wax to protect those furry feet.
Dogs get hot and thirsty very, very quickly running and playing at the shore. Make sure Fido always has fresh water!
While some dogs are naturals in the water, others need to be taught to swim. Don’t assume that Fido will instinctively figure it out the first time. Give him time to get used to the water, and support him as he’s learning.
As a rule of thumb, you’d want to follow the same safety precautions with Fido at the pool as you would for a toddler. Keep pools gated off when not in use. Be sure to teach your pooch where the stairs are, so he can get out if he accidentally falls in.
