Did you know that October 11th is Spoodle Day? This can be a bit confusing, as there are a few types of spoodles. One is a utensil, and technically is a mix between a spoon and a ladle. (We’ll leave celebrating these to the chefs and foodies out there.) The other type of Spoodle is much more in our wheelhouse! This is a relatively new dog breed that has become quite popular in a very short time. A local Seminole, FL vet discusses these cute pups below.
The Spoodle is a mix between Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. Fido actually has several names: he is also referred to as a Cockapoo, Cockerpoo, Cocker Doodle, or, perhaps most clearly, the Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix. Spoodle first became a popular term in Australia, but it’s spreading. In fact, the doodle dog phenomenon is also spreading. There are now more than 50 types of doodle dogs! However, the Poodle remains the only one accepted by the AKC … so far.
Spoodles are really adorable. In fact, these little guys often look like teddy bears. They usually have the curly, dense coats that Poodles are known for. In fact, that coat may be Fido’s most popular trait. Spoodles aren’t truly hypoallergenic. However, because their dense fur traps dander, and because they don’t shed much, they are easier for people with allergies to cope with.
Fido is usually on the smaller side of the scale here. Spoodles rarely grow taller than 15 inches, and shouldn’t weigh more than 25 pounds. Many are sold as toy breeds or designer dogs. This makes them a popular choice for people that live in apartments.
This is one area where the Spoodle really shines. These guys are typically super friendly and affectionate. They are also great with children, and just generally very fun and lovable little pets. Fido will need plenty of exercise and playtime, but he doesn’t necessarily have to have a huge yard.
Just like any other pooch, Fido will need a proper diet, regular activity, good grooming, and veterinary care to stay healthy. It’s worth noting that these guys are prone to developing a few health problems, such as skin trouble, ear infections, and cataracts. Ask your vet for specific care tips.
